A total of 170 candidates have filed nomination papers for the March 3 Senate elections. According to the schedule issued by the Election Commission, the nomination papers of the candidates contesting the Senate elections in the federal capital Islamabad and the four provincial capitals are being scrutinized.

The Election Commission has the full support of NAB, FIA, NADRA, FBR, and SBP to scrutinize the nomination papers of the candidates. In this regard, all the concerned agencies have sent their data to the Election Commission.
So far, the nomination papers of PTI candidates for Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Sheikh and Fauzia Arshad, Farhatullah Babar of PPP, and Kamil Ali Agha of PML-Q have been accepted, besides Jamshed Iqbal Cheema of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf as an independent candidate. Nominations have been accepted.

PTI objects to Pervez Rashid

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has objected to the nomination papers of PML-N candidate Pervez Rashid. The PTI has taken the position that Pervez Rashid submitted his nomination papers for the general seat but the technocrat seat was mentioned in the affidavit.

He has been misrepresented in the nomination papers so he is not eligible to contest the elections. He has been speaking against national institutions in his speeches. Therefore, under Article 63G, he is not a suitable candidate for the Senate elections. Besides, Pervez Rashid is also a defaulter of Parliament Lodges.

According to the Election Commission’s schedule, the scrutiny of candidates’ papers will be held from February 17 to 18. Appeals on the papers can be filed till February 20, all the appeals will be disposed of by February 23 while the final list of candidates will be released on February 24. Candidates will be able to withdraw their nomination papers till February 25 while polling will be held on March 3.
